• Negative: The standard of food offered at the hotel, it was like a school canteen. Tea and coffee at breakfast was self service from a machine and attracted queues of guests, no tea or coffee pots were available.

Matters outside the hotel's control: [a] at some times of the day there was a nasty smell cooming to the west side of the hotel from the town sewers; [b] unnecessary and persistent noise from the town carnaval arrangements, unofficial parties below the hotel which the police made no effort to control and cleaning up operation by the council with noisy machines early in the morning.

• Staff: 7.5 Maitre de was helpful, friendly, though perhaps a little too tactile for some. Generally the waiting staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. There was one dining room waiter who did not seem to like his customers, his work or life in general and who, although he attended to all he was required to, appeared to do it under suffrance. Waiters in outside public areas could be trained to be a little more vigilant and look around them more frequently.

• Negative: being given a non seaview room when I booked seaview even for just 1 night a free drink is not good enough as an apology. also I paid for the more expensive room! and being given keys to a room still occupied and in use by a couple enjoying the bed!! when I walked in I was embarrassed and so were they.
